my sister had an old 32gb intel macbook with 1TB i just couldnt let go unused. not really old, the last of the line of intel macs, the 2019 16 inch. I started with wanting to install Ubuntu Server, so i can have a place to tinker and test out stuff. But because i had never done a partition and deleted the MacOS completely i was scared of turning it into a brick. Oh yes, forgot to mention the screen on the laptop was completely useless on the mac so everything i did depended on an external display. which is an art in itself learning how to make the external display take priority over the built in. Even considered making it headless, but hardware itsnt my thing. maybe another time.
So i braced myself and took a plunge. I found a YouTube video that detailed the entire process. It was perfect. The video followed instructions from T2Linux. They advised installing ubuntu alongside the MacOS as a partition (for driver updates). Which was perfect for me cause i wasn’t ready for the commitment. Only that there was a problem, i did not actually want Ubuntu Desktop, i wanted Ubuntu Server. I googled and it said they were close enough and i could still ssh and treat it like a server. So i did just that.
Coincidentally my husband was also working on setting up his homelab, with a bunch of raspberry pis and a lenovo machine. So i felt even more inspired to reach for Ubuntu Server. I kept looking, and i went down the YouTube rabbit hole of homelabs and discovered Proxmox. I couldn’t believe something liken that existed. It was too good to be true. I could have many VMs of ubuntu server to play with and discard as i pleased? Count me in. I bing watched the process and i was ready. Same YouTuber detailed the process, and just like that, i had proxmox on my mac. I named it argungu (inspiration from husband😁) and spun a vn and installed ubuntu server on it. And i called that VM bagaye, to keep the trend haha.
I had to wipe the macOS which i really did not care for anymore 😄
Now I’ll be using it to learn Terraform, Ansible, possible k8s, Grafana and Prometheus. DevOps here i come
Just that the mac keeps restarting itself. Dont know why and how to fix that yet…
